Employers’ Council reacts to ‘The Big Reset’

On Thursday, May 6th, Dame Moya Greene released the long awaited report from the Premier’s Economic Recovery Team. The report entitled ‘The Big Reset’ highlighted the dire financial crisis the province is facing and how we can ‘right the ship’.

The NL Employer’s Council Executive Director, Richard Alexander, was in the news responding to the report. He said the main message coming from the report is the future of the province is in jeopardy. Government needs to action spending reforms and reform how they deliver programs and services before they take more money from the wallets of hardworking Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Here are a few highlights from the report:

  • Government should reduce its core expenditures by five per cent, with no expenditure growth for six years
  • Create a future fund
  • Support technology sector
  • Allow private & non-for-profit businesses deliver services where appropriate
  • Support immigration & retention
  • Deliver more efficient health care.
