In late January, Federal Human Resources Mnister Diane Finley announced the federal government is closing it’s seasonal student job centres and is instead bolstering it’s online job resources for youth. This decision will have little to no impact on the employers represented by the NLEC.
When asked by the NLEC, the overwhelming majority of member employers reported that they currently do not use the centres, and that they focus the majority of their student recruitment efforts online. The decision of this government to focus on online resources shows a recognition of the current and future reality of recruitment, particularly for the youth demographic. The closure of these centres will save the federal government $6.5 million anually, and is an efficient and prudent use of taxpayers’ dollars.
